On the occasion of Easter time, the Department of Polish Studies and Translation together with the Institute of Poland and the Research and Training Laboratory of Ukrainian-Polish Translation organised a series of open lectures “Polish liturgical translation: selected issues of history and criticism.” This issue was discussed with the students by Taras Schmiger, a Visiting Professor of the Department of Translation Studies and Contrastive Linguistics at Lviv Ivan Franko National University. Scientific and didactic meetings were held within the framework of the international project of the Visegrad Fund. Taras Schmiger, a Hryhorii Kochur Prize laureate and a representative of his scientific school, suggested choosing the lines from his mentor’s poetic meditation “I should be their voice” as the motto of the joint academic work:
Ми скромним словом правди тихої
Стозвукий галас переборем.
With our humble word of quiet truth
Omnivocal noise will be loose.
Lectures on the history and practice of liturgical translation were open for discussion: 1) The Middle Ages: The beginnings? 2) From the Renaissance to the Enlightenment; 3) Father Henryk Paprocki, Orthodox translator in a Catholic country; 4) “Dies irae”: problems of reproduction of emotions; 5) Symbols of faith: dogmas and language experiments; 5) Names of liturgical books as a problem of translation. During these discussions, the students could expand their vocabulary not only from Polish, but also from their native Ukrainian language. Most of the topics were a true revelation for them. Anatolii Olikh, a translator of liturgical Catholic texts in Ukraine, joined the classes. Students had a great opportunity to practice their own liturgical translation, identify its difficulties and opportunities.

Due to such meetings, the students’ professionalism grows and translation competencies develop, so we plan to organise similar series of lectures in the future.
