Training the undergraduates for the first (Bachelor) level of higher education in the Specialty 029 Information, Library and Archival Affairs (titled “Documentation and Information Activity” untill 2016) at the Faculty of History, Political Science and National Security of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University began in 2004, with good traditions and 14 highly qualified specialist graduates.
The modern labour market’s demand for professionals in this field is constantly growing. This process runs simultaneously with the intensive development of information and communication technologies, without the use of which any information activity is impossible.
According to the Law of Ukraine “On Information”, information activity is a set of actions aimed at meeting the information needs of citizens, legal entities and the state through the creation of information centres, information and analytical services, departments for the analysis of document information, information and documentation centres, commercial information services, information systems, networks, databases and data banks. Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University prepares qualified specialists of the first (Bachelor) level in the Specialty 029 Information, Library and Archival Affairs on the basis of the accredited educational and professional programme “Documentation Support of Management and Information and Analytical Activity” with graduates obtaining professional qualifications relevant in the modern labour market: “Specialist in Information and Analytical Activities. Business organiser. Referent Secretary”.
The choice of the name of the educational and professional programme predetermined by the needs and requirements dictated by the modern information sphere of management decision-making and the actual processes in the social and communication sphere both in Volyn and in Ukraine in general: the active development of electronic communication systems, telecommunications, the creation of the information system and network space, legislative changes regarding the powers of local self-government bodies, an increase in the current documentation fund in the management decision-making system in both the public and private sectors, the introduction of electronic governance, etc.
The modern educational programme “Documentation Support of Management and Information-Analytical Activity” is focused on the training of specialists ready to develop, implement and ensure the functioning of a single technological process of documenting management information in an institution (organisation, enterprise). The programme provides for the acquisition of both thorough theoretical skills and practical experience in the organisation and management of electronic document management systems, measures to ensure information security, implementation of basic directions of electronic governance, organisation of archival storage of documents based on modern information technologies, conducting business communication and other aspects.
The students acquire important practical skills during internships. The programme includes four internships, one of which is educational, and the other three are industrial. During the internship, the students develop professional skills and abilities for their future profession on the basis of the theoretical knowledge obtained at the higher education institution and its application in practice.
The purpose of internships is to consolidate theoretical knowledge and form the students’ professional ability to make independent decisions in the conditions of a specific institution (enterprise, organisation). Moreover, this type of educational activity helps to master modern methods, forms of work organisation: practical skills of documentation management, automation of information processes, functioning of automated information systems and networks, etc.
Acquainting the students with the peculiarities of the future profession, acquiring professional skills and abilities from the above-mentioned general professional and special disciplines is an integral part of practice. The purpose of industrial practice is to give the student an opportunity to test oneself as a manager of the information industry, a specialist in the field of organisation of office and reference activities, and to contribute to the comprehensive implementation of acquired knowledge and skills in the conditions of independent performance of tasks in the information, analytical and management spheres, in the field of management documentation support.
Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University concludes contracts for their implementation with internship bases (enterprises, organisations, institutions of various forms of ownership) in advance. During the implementation of the EP “Documentation Support for Management and Information and Analytical Activities”, the internship bases were: Volyn Regional State Administration; Lutsk City Council; Lutsk District State Administration; Lutsk District Council; Kovel City Council; GB of the National Police in Volyn region; State Archive of Volyn region; “Modern-expo” JV LLC; “Olyka Agro Invest” private enterprise; “Public Interactive Television” NGO; “Channel 12” media holding; the library, archive and other structural divisions of the University, etc. Therefore, internships are an integral part of the highly qualified specialists’ training in the Specialty 029 Information, Library and Archival Affairs preparing them for future professional activities.
