On December, 4 there took place an online round table discussion “Media Literacy for Everyone: Our Educational Benchmarks” at the Faculty of Philology and Journalism, organized by the Department of Social Communications.
The discussion gathered round 100 scholars, students and teachers from around the region, all interested in developing their media literacy. The participants talked about the ways to present it to different age categories, introducing separate themes like: media-literate people; ways to develop critical thinking. At that stage, problems and landmarks were outlined.
In modern digitalized world, media literacy tends to include games. So, the Head of the Department of Social Communications Olena Kosheliuk spoke about gamification as an element of introducing media literacy, as well as her own experience of development of a virtual media quest. Gamification is a world trend in the study of media literacy. The speaker presented online games and materials helpful to study media literacy. “These technologies are our future”, she said.
The discussion was organized within the project “Study and Distinguish: Informational and Media Literacy”, coordinated by the International Research and Exchange Council, supported by the U.S. and British Embassies, the Ministry of Education of Ukraine, and the Academy of Ukrainian Press.
