Rector of Lesya Ukrainka Eastern European National University
Igor Kotsan was born on August14, in1960 inLviv region. In 1984 he graduated from the Lesya Ukrainka Lutsk State Pedagogical Institute and got a specialist diploma in Geography and Biology, and later, in 1990 – in Sports.
In 1990, Igor Kotsan finished the UNESCO courses in the French language at the Volodymyr Lenin Moscow State Pedagogical Institute. In 2006 he was a member of the International Leadership Program "Educational Testing" organized by the Department of Education of the US Government. In 2006 at the Central Institute of the Postgraduate Pedagogical Education at the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine Igor Kotsan finished training courses in the category "Rectors of the Universities of the III-IV levels of Accreditation", and in 2013, at the University of the Educational Management of the NAPS of Ukraine he finished special courses in the category "University Rectors (Reserve of the Rectors) of the III-IV levels of Accreditation ".
In1995 inthe specialized scientfic council of theSouthUkrainianNationalPedagogicalUniversitynamed after K.D. Ushynsky Igor Kotsan defended his PhD thesis in the field of Pedagogy and in2001 inspecialized scientific council of theTarasShevchenkoKyivNationalUniversityhe defended doctoral thesis and got a diploma of a Doctor of Biological Sciences.
Igor Kotsan has been working at the Lesya Ukrainka Eastern European National University since 1989 as a senior teacher of sports (1989-1996), assistant professor of the department of health and physical culture (1999-2001), professor of the department of human and animals’ physiology (since 2001) and as its head since 2005.
Igor Kotsan is the author of more than 200 scientific and educational works, including fundamental monographs, textbooks and manuals for students, scientific articles published in professional journals of Ukraine and collections of various scientific conferences materials. Igor Kotsan is a chief editor of the “Scientific Bulletin of theLesyaUkrainkaEasternEuropeanNationalUniversity” which is included into the list of the professional scientific journals of the Higher Attestation Commission of Ukraine.
Nowadays in the field of scientific studies Igor Kotsan is the head of the brunch of the researches “Neurophysiological Mechanisms and Vegetative Provision of Cognitive Activity of Human being (age, environmental and individual typological aspects)”. Under his leadership neurophysiological features of a cognitive activity (phase processing of verbal and nonverbal information, voluntary and involuntary attention, emotions, intellectual and creative talents, etc.) and vegetative manifestations that accompany it are studied. An environmental direction of such studies has got a special development. Igor Kotsan manages a complex research on the state budget theme “Physiological Correlates of the Mode of Implementation of Cognitive Operations”.
Professor Kotsan is a Chairman of the Scientific Coordinating Council in the Western Scientific Center of the Ntional Academy of Science of Ukraine and Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in Volyn region; President of the Ukrainian Biophysical Society; Chairman of the Specialized Scientific Council in the Lesya Ukrainka Eastern European National University (for the defense of the PhD thesis in the field of pedagogy); member of the specialized scientific council in the Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University (for the defense of the thesis for the degrees of PhD and Doctor of Biological Sciences). Professor Kotsan is a scientific supervisor of many PhD thesis in the field of biology.
Professor Kotsan is a head of the organizing boards of many domestic and international scientific conferences.
In 2005 by the order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine Professor Kotsan was appointed to be a rector of the Lesya Ukrainka Volyn State University (since 2012 –the Lesya Ukrainka Eastern European National University). Since that time Professor Kotsan has been contributing a lot into the process of educating good leaders for the professional and social spheres who will also be able to introduce Volyn and discoverUkraineto the world community at the time of its integration intoEurope.
One of the very important achievements of Igor Kotsan was creation of very favourable conditions for the university to get a status of a national university which was given to it by the President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko (Decree of the President of Ukraine, № 903/2007 issued on 20.09, 2007, order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine № 875 issued on 04.10, 2007).
In April 2013, for the significant contributions into the social, economic, scientific, technical, cultural and educational development of the Ukrainian state, great professional achievements and conscientious work Igor Kotsan was awarded the honorary title “Honored Worker of Science of Ukraine” by the Decree of the President of Ukraine №242 / 2013.
Professor Kotsan is a respected man in the university community and undoubted authority for the students, young researchers and colleagues.
