Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry provides education for the students of the Faculty of Chemistry (bachelor, specialist and master’s degrees) and Biology (bachelor’s degree). Main research interests of the department scientists:
- Phase equilibria in complex chalcogenide and halide systems, the crystal structure of the ternary and quaternary phase crystal growth of complex chalcogenides and halides, the synthesis of glassy alloys and composites, the properties of new chalcogenides and halide.
- Search for new functional materials for various industries, which is achieved through the study and construction of stable and metastable phase equilibria diagrams, establishing crystal structure found phases of development of fusion technology and the growth of single crystals of compounds, solid solutions, glasses, obtaining films and composite materials, the study of the properties of complex chalcogenides and halides and recommendations for practical use.
- Discovery of a great number of quaternary compounds, ternary solid solutions, glassy substances. Many of these materials exhibit unique properties, allowing them to recommend for practical use in electronics, optoelectronics and nonlinear optics. Among the most interesting developments are the solid solutions based on copper-indium diselenide, which can be used in solar energy materials as absorbing layer of thin-film solar cells. Promising non-linear optical materials are compounds AgGaGeS4, AgGaGe3Se8, AgCd2GaS4, for which the technology of industrial-size single crystals was developed. In the entire period of the scientific school, the technology of single crystal growth of more than 20 complex chalcogenides and halides was developed, more than 600 new compounds, solid solutions and glassy alloys were created.
Department instructors and co-workers participate in national and international professional conferences (Kyiv, Lviv, Uzhgorod, Kharkiv, Krakow (Poland),Wroclaw(Poland),Munster(Germany),Ulyanovsk(Russia),Tomsk(Russia)) with oral and poster presentations. Associate Professors O.F. Zmiy and O.V. Parasyuk were awarded diplomas byInternationalCenterfor Diffraction Data (ICDD) for 2005–2009 for active cooperation. In the period of 2008–2012 the Department has 269 publications, including 126 articles in international journals with the citation index over 1.0 monitored by SCOPUS science-metrics database.

The department operates four scientific problem groups.
- 1. Problem group “Arsenic”. Leader: Associate Professor O.F. Zmiy, Ph.D.
Objective: To obtain and study the properties of new materials that can be used in semiconductor materials (research quasi-ternary systems Ag2Se–SnSe–AgSbSe2, AgSbSe2–SnSe–Sb2Se3, Ag2Se–GeSe–AgSbSe2, AgSbSe2–GeSe–Sb2Se3). Attendance 10 students (years 1-5).
- 2. Problem group “Crystal”. Leader: Associate Professor O.V Marchuk, Ph.D.
Objective: search for promising new semiconductor materials, study of their properties and the crystal structure of compounds (research of systems R2X3–PbX–DIVX2, where R=rare-earth metal ; DIV=Si, Ge; X=S, Se). Attendance 4 students (years 4-5).
- 3. Problem group “Glass”. Leader: Sr. Lab Technician I.I. Mazuretz’, Ph.D.
Objective: synthesis and study of the properties of new materials that can be used in semiconductor materials science (glass formation in systems Cu(Ag)2S–GeS2–P2S5). Attendance 6 students (years 2-5).
- 4. Problem group “Single Crystal”. Leader: Associate Professor L.V. Piskach, Ph.D.
Objective: synthesis and study of the properties of new chalcogenide and halogenide materials that can be used in semiconductor materials science (study of systems TlI–HgI2–PbI2, Cu2S–Co(Ni,Cr)–TiS2). Attendance 8 students (years 3-5).
Associate Professor L.V. Piskach is the Advisor for the scientific activities of students at the Department of Chemistry. Every year students of years 1-5 participate in scientific conference "Volyn Through the Eyes of Young Scientists: Past, Present and Future", submit articles to the scientific bulletin ofLesyaUkrainkaEasternNationalUniversity, "Chemical Sciences" series.
