The Department of History and Culture of the Ukrainian Language was established in 1993, as a result of the reorganization of the Department of the Ukrainian Language. It was headed by Doctor of Philology, Professor Hryhorii Arkushyn. Since 1997, the department has been headed by Professor Svitlana Bohdan.

The department arranged and held 5 International Conferences "Linguistic Stylistics of the XXI Century: Status and Prospects" (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021) and launched a scientific journal "Linguistic and Stylistic Studies" (15 issues) (editor-in-chief – Hromyk Yurii (since 2020), deputy editor-in-chief – Bohdan Svitlana, executive secretary – Tarasiuk Tetiana (since 2016)).
During 2017–2018, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the department, a series of lectures by well-known linguists, scientists, teachers (Prof. Hrytsenko Pavlo, prof. Moisienko Victor, prof. Farion Iryna, Assoc. Pavlenko Larysa, Ph.D. in History Sapeliak Oksana, Honored Teacher of Ukraine Olesia Kovalchuk) were delivered.
In 2020, the department launched the project "Educational Trajectory of Success" (an author of the idea and a coordinator – Bohdan Svitlana). Within the framework of the project the following events were held: a round table discussion "SELECTIVE disciplines: motivation of CHOICE" (May 25, 2020, a moderator – Levchuk Iryna, organizers – Bohdan Svitlana, Tarasiuk Tetiana), a master class "Course work for 100 points: not easy, but achievable" (October 28, 2020, moderators: Bohdan Svitlana, Skoruk Iryna, Tarasiuk Tetiana), a summer online school "Academic Writing and Integrity: easy About Difficult" (August 1-10, 2020, coordinators – Bohdan Svitlana, Levchuk Iryna, Lokaychuk Svitlana, Malenytska Olha, Pryimachok Oksana, Tarasiuk Tetiana)
In 2021, Professor Svitlana Bohdan delivered two public lectures for students of the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine ("Retrospective interview with Lesya Ukrainka, an attempt at reconstruction", "Self-portrait of Lesya Ukrainka in the light of her epistolary"). Professor Yurii Hromyk was a participant, co-manager of the national project aimed at the development of the model of information product of a graphic nature "Production of printing products. Creativity of Lesya Ukrainka. Complete Academic Collection of Lesya Ukrainka's Works in 14 Volumes ”, which was performed by Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University in 2020 at the request of the State Institution “Ukrainian Book Institute”; member of the editorial board of the Complete Academic Collection of Lesya Ukrainka's works in 14 volumes (2021), in particular editor of volumes 10 and 13, co-author of the preface and notes and co-editor of the 9th volume.

Every year the department conducts presentations of scientific and educational publications of the department members: presentation 2019–2021.
In 2021, a joint meeting of the Department of History and Culture of the Ukrainian Language of Lesya Ukrainka University and the Department of History and Culture of Yurii Fedkovych University of Ukraine "Innovative methods of teaching linguistics in modern conditions" was organized.
The department successfully cooperates with many educational and scientific institutions of Ukraine (in particular, with the Ukrainian Language Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Zhytomyr Pedagogical University, Rivne State University of Humanities, Sumy State Pedagogical University named after A.S.
